How To Develop A Positive Spirit

Introduction

When you find yourself sliding into the darkness of negative thinking, it is pointless to try to talk yourself out of it. There may be some real issues that need to be addressed.

Write

To help you to honestly look at these negatives, write them out on the left side of a piece of paper.

Evaluate

On a separate piece of paper, evaluate these complaints.

1. Honest Complaints

Decide which are honest complaints and which are smoke screens. Smoke screens are things we complain about in other people because we don't want to take responsibility for our own actions.

Example: Let's say you didn't achieve your monthly goals for 3 months in a row.  Perhaps you are blaming the company, the quality of the product, the management, the customers.

2. Taking Responsibility

Evaluate where you could be responsible (not to blame).

Your responsibility could be in anything from slacking off, to staying in a dead-end job.

After honestly evaluating this information, complete the next step.

3. Looking at the positives

After evaluating the negatives, on the right side of the paper put a positive/opposite statement.

Many times this exercise will help you to see where you can improve as well as help you to creatively see solutions that were hidden in the negative.

I call this the Do and Don't Want List, which is explained in detail below.

Do and Don't Want
Action List

By making a list of your "Don't wants," you are identifying what you have or are experiencing in your life.

To identify what you DO want, you merely identify what the opposite would be.

When we make these lists, it helps us to identify and clarify what is not working in our lives.

After identifying what you do want (the opposite of what you have), you can then begin to focus on what you want. This takes us out of a self defeating and self pitying state, into a positive action mode.

These lists work on any area of you life. However, don't mix issues. If you are unhappy at work and unhappy at home, make different lists for each issue.

Example of a Don't/Do Want List

Remember the 3 steps above:

List the Don't Want.

On a separate piece of paper, list where you might be responsible (not to blame) for creating the Don't Want.

List the Do Want.

Example

1. I don't make enough money.

1. I will introduce 3 new people per day to my product/service. I will then easily make the money I need and deserve, while helping others to achieve the same.

2. I made a mistake at work and feel stupid and embarrassed.

2. Everyone makes mistakes. I apologized, learned something new, and know these feelings shall soon pass.

3. I'm not doing well at my job.

3. I am talented, love my job, and recognize I have been thinking negatively, and I have the power to make positive changes.

4. My performance is down.

4. I may not have been giving the right information, or listening to the customer's needs. I will ask more questions, and listen more carefully.

5. No one appreciates me.

5. When things are not going my way I need support. I need to learn to ask for help, opinions, and support.

Evaluating your
Don't/Do Want List

After completing your Don't/Do want list, we need to evaluate the list to determine what might be happening and what a positive course of action might be.

PMT

First determine you Positive Motivational Talent ( PMT).

For this example we will use Altruistic.

Needs & Motivation

Altruistic PMT indicates that you, more than any other type, needs superior products, attention, and support.

Pitfalls

Altruistic PMT indicates than when there is a problem you may take it personally.

Specific Needs

The overall complaints seems to indicate that Altruistic PMTs have two types of needs:

1. Personal Needs

Those personal needs of attention and support that you can develop for yourself.

It is unfair to ask a company, supervisor, mentor, client or sponsor to meet all our needs. We need to take responsibility for our emotional needs.

2. Ask for help.

You need to learn when to ask for help and advice.

Pitfalls of "Positive Thinking"

Positive thinking, without uncovering the motivation and need behind negative thinking, is developed from the "outside in," and tends to be nothing more than wishful thinking.

It rarely lasts, and can lead to frustration and anger.

By using these tools, as well as the tools in the chapter on Meditations, we can develop our strong and positive nature from the "inside out," which is a lasting state of being.

True positive thinking = positive self image = solutions = persistence = success.

This Do Want/Action list may seem too simple, but most solutions are too simple to see.

This list allows you to feel in control again, to focus on solutions, and to see what your responsibility is, and what it is not. That gives you a basis for determining what actions you can take to correct the situation, as well as to know in what specific areas you need to ask help with.

This is a powerful tool to redirect the frozen, non-action of negative thinking, into a positive, solutions oriented action.
