Motivational and Success Keys

Introduction

You want to own your own business?

Then you must be prepared to face the most frustrating and rewarding experience you will ever have.

In order to maintain high performance and avoid burn out, more than technique is needed. You need

A positive and creative mental attitude.

Desire to succeed.

Imagination

Persistence

And most of all faith in yourself and your abilities.

In order to develop these successful qualities, I will share with you in these pages how to begin to understand yourself and your PREDOMINATE MOTIVATIONAL TALENT (PMT).

When you understand your PMT, and are clear on what motivates you, you will be better able to overcome obstacles by refocusing on your motivating strengths.

Motivation is a matter of  keeping ourselves excited and interested in what we are doing, which gives us physical and mental energy to continue to motivate ourselves.

Motivation, excitement, and high energy feed on themselves and create more, and more, provided we make the effort to nurture our motivation.

We cannot fake motivation, it must come from within, and it takes an effort to maintain motivation. However, the rewards are so numerous that it is well worth every ounce of effort.

Too many times repetition and familiarity can cause us to become bored with even the most exciting aspects of our lives.

A good example of this is to watch a couple when they are newly in love. Everything the other person does or says is very important to their partner. As time goes on the sparkle wears away, everyday life worries and struggles begin to take precedent, and they begin to take each other for granted.

This exact same thing happens to most people in their work. They go into a "robot routine" where they could do their jobs while asleep. This job then feels comfortable, safe, and secure...until the company begins to demand more, has serious financial problems, and/or begins to lay-off their employees.

In order to become successful, and to enjoy your work, you need to find what motivates you. In other words, what specific Talents do you have that excite you to action?

So, our first step is to IDENTIFY your predominant motivating Talent (steps are below).

All people are motivated by more than one talent. However, when the going get rough or routine, a predominate talent will stand out.

Example

Mary was a valued sales person. She was excellent with her clients, was great at trouble shooting, was organized, consistently met her sales goals, and was making great money.

During a time when finances were tight, the company decided to cut quality but not price. Mary immediately quit.

Why? Her Predominant Motivating Talent was Altruistic. She needed to feel she was giving her customers the highest quality product available.

The below information will help you to determine which talent is your predominate motivating talent. Once this is identified, the next chapters will help you to develop your Motivating Talent.

Please note that while this information was written for the sales profession, you should easily be able to relate the information to your life circumstances.  Further, most people who are successful in MLM are not, nor have they ever been, professional sales persons.

Identifying Your Predominant
Motivating Talent

Money Motivated

Positive Talents

Nothing gets you going like making money and pulling together deals.

After each sale you know exactly how much you made on the initial sale, and approximately how much you can expect from subsequent sales/renewals.

Each sale (monetary gain), gets your creative and motivational energy flowing and spurs you on to the next challenge.

Challenging Talents

When times are tough, it is very hard for you to stay motivated.

Since money motivated people tend to be "I" oriented, watch out for self-sabotage.

Things such as blaming others or self pity can rob you of your precious motivation.

Suggestions

  1. Since money is the motivating Talent, motivating pep talks are generally little more than band aids for you.

What you need is to "prime the pump," look at your situation from another perspective, challenge yourself, review past successes. Ask yourself what you were doing differently when things were flowing.

  2. People who are money motivated are very "I" oriented.

While personal  attention/recognition feeds your ego, it very seldom is enough.

You need to learn to take care of your own "I", ego needs. Make your  job a game. Set realistic goals, then try to exceed your goals.

See the chapter on Meditations for suggestions on how to meet your inner needs.

If you are in MLM, challenge yourself to help so many people per day to find health and success. Focus on the fact that the more people you help to become successful, the more successful you will become.

You will no longer be so "I" focused, and will find that making others successful, in order to become successful yourself, has made you a more interesting and caring person.

Power Motivated

Positive Talents

You want power.

The power to persuade others, the power that comes from being the company's top producer, therefore indispensable (secure). For you it is the thrill of the game, being the best, receiving recognition (and the money just naturally follows).

Challenging Talents

You can be egotistical, unethical, and hard to handle.

Many people who are Power Motivated have very challenging personal lives. The money contests hold little interest for you, but the thrill of winning the contest does. You are a high achiever, as long as you receive PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE.

On a deeper level you can be very insecure, and if you do not think you are adequately appreciated, you will seek employment elsewhere.

You also have a tendency to be a "Flash in the pan" type. When other power motivated people are held up as an example, it can spell disaster for your moral.

Suggestions

Learn to appreciate your finer qualities, then learn to appreciate them in others.

This is not a world of "Me against them," but of  "Us working together."

See the chapter on Meditations to help you recognize and appreciate your inner strength. Your egotistical insecurity will be replaced by self-love, self-respect, and an inner strength that can sustain you through the ups and downs of life.

Individualism & Freedom Motivated

Positive Talents

While you are not consistently the top producer of your company, you usually end your month near your goals, and are a steady worker.

In other words, you are the bread and butter of your company.

You have a well rounded life with varied interests outside of business, and those interests tend to be more emotionally important to you than your job.

When given the freedom you need in all areas of  your life, you will give you loyalty, honesty and steady results.

If you feel roped in and pushed to conform/perform under strict guidelines,  you will most likely be looking for a way out.

Challenging Talents

You will do most anything for personal freedom, to be your own person, to work you own hours without much supervision, and to "Reap what you sow."

You are not particularly motivated by contests, money and power (although you like them),  and may respond to motivational pep talks if they relate to how you can be more effective in your own way.

You hate rules and structures. When you are given creative freedom, you will give results and your loyalty.

Suggestions

Most people feel they have achieved true freedom when they own their own business.

However, owning a successful business requires self discipline, and sacrificing personal freedom in order to build that business.

For this reason it is imperative that your business is based on something you feel passionate about.

See the chapter Meditations for suggestions on finding inner peace and freedom.

Altruism

Positive Talents

You NEED to believe that what you are offering to others has value.

In return you want recognition for representing the finest  product/company, offering the best service, and going the extra mile.

You are very people oriented, and very giving of yourself, but you also need recognition for the "extra" you put into your work.

When there is a problem, supervisors tend to go to you because you love to help solve problems.

You are the person most responsible for building the company's reputation as being humane and caring.

Challenging Talents

Because you give so much of yourself, you need to be motivated by reinforcement and recognition for all the special attention you give to you clients.

You put so much into your work that your actually feel depleted if you do not receive recognition.

If you are asked to represent a product or service that is of questionable quality, you tend to feel dishonest and used. In most cases you will no longer trust the integrity of the the company, and move on.

Further, if your performance is evaluated on the same basis as a different type of motivating Talent, you tend to feel unvalued and demoralized.

As an example: To you someone with a Power Motivating Talent may seem cold, dishonest, and manipulating.

Suggestions

In order to break your dependence on outer approval, learn to go within to find self support and acceptance.

You can learn to identify why you need approval, and to please others.

Many times the altruistic person is seeking to prove their worth and can fall into the trap of being a martyr.

See the chapter on Meditations.

Order, Structure, & Organizational

Positive Talents

You have everything written down and organized.

You know who you saw, when you saw them, and what happened.

After starting a new job/project, you rely on your ability to organize. You have a "tried and true" way of handling all situations that brings you comfort and results. You know who to see, when to see them, what to say, and have all your literature at hand.

You are very proud of your organizational ability, and when things are not organized it drives you nuts.

Challenging Talents

It is important that you identify and acknowledge your NEED for order.

You can get so stuck in organizing that you don't get much else done.

When a new line, management team, or new way of running business is introduced, you need extra attention to help you incorporate these changes into your structured way of doing things.

You tend to get set in your ways, and are most productive when managed and guided according to your organizational needs.

Suggestions

You tend to be so structured that you lack flexibility.

Spur of the moment activities, surprises, and anything out of the norm tend to throw you off.

It would be helpful if you learned more flexibility, and to pay more attention to self-nurturing.

See the chapter Animated Meditations.

Exercise

1. Identify your PMT t hen identify and expand on the positive side of your unique talent.

How does this make you unique?

How can  identifying your PMT help you in all areas of your life.

 2. How does your PMT help you to understand your role:

  With motivating yourself.

What new understanding do you have of how, why and on what you have been dependent for your motivation?

What changes will you make?

Understanding how you relate to the client?

What new insights do you have on your relationship with your customers, and how do you believe you have  been meeting their needs.

What will you change?

Understanding your role with the company?

What role have you been  playing? Have you been power/money playing, dragging your feet while you  re-organize, or playing a martyr?

How has that worked for you?

Do you think that role will still work for you? Why or why not?

What changes will you make?

 3. When you meet obstacles, how can focusing on your PMT help to keep you motivated?

No one of these personality types are more valuable than the other.

It takes all types of people to make the world go around. No matter what level of financial success the personality type has achieved, each can have peace and inner freedom, or misery and bondage.

Some of the most financially successful people I have known have also been the most personally unsuccessful and fearful, always afraid that their riches or happiness will be taken away.

On the other hand, I have met people who were financially struggling, yet would not hesitate to give what they could if you were in need.

Which of the two do you suppose was the happiest?

I am in no way suggesting that financial success leads to personal unhappiness. I have met many, many people whose lives where in ruins because of financial burdens.

What I am saying is that through investing time in personal development, you can have it all.

Spend time with the entire chapter on Success and Freedom, as well as Wisdom of Ancient Healing, particularly with the chapter on Meditations .

Make a commitment to your personal development and happiness. You will soon find that:

  • You "Reap what you sow"

  • That you have the power to make positive changes

  • And that inner success attracts outer success.
