For various reasons, the holidays are challenging times for many people.
Stress of the extra work and expectations, remembrance of old wounds,
missing loved ones who have died or moved away, loneliness, and lack of
sunshine are just some of the reasons that the holiday blues may set in.
When we have these extra emotional challenges, our
body/brain chemistry changes. These chemistry changes can trigger
anything from the "blues" to full blown depression (Also see
The
Anatomy of Depression for a full article explaining brain
chemistry changes, and the article on
St
Johnswort outlines all the latest research findings about the
effectiveness of this herb in combating depression).
What to do?
Take
care of yourself first.
|
|
| |
|
|
For most people, this seems to be the most difficult
thing to do. We tend to believe that we are the only one who can do
everything we believe needs to be done. But think, if you don't take care of
yourself you have nothing to give to others, especially is you become
severely stressed or ill.
 |
Set aside time for yourself
Make it clear to all family and friends that this is your special time,
no exceptions (unless it is an emergency).
Use this time for meditation, bathing, reading, shopping, having nails
or hair done, etc.
How often should you have time alone? Every day!
|
 |
Allow others to help you.
Don't you love to help others? Why deny them the opportunity to do
things for you?
Even small children can easily be taught to do small personal things
such as brushing your hair, "helping" with cooking & shopping, etc.
At first it is difficult and time consuming to allow others to do
things for you. However, if you are allowing them to help (rather
than demanding) you will quickly see just how much most people love to
help, and they will actually become helpful.
Also, don't forget to tell them how much you appreciate what they
have done.
|
 |
Eat healthy meals.
In our fast paced and toxic world it is difficult to eat properly. In
order to make sure you are getting all your minerals and vitamins,
at the very least take a high quality multiple vitamin every day (A
recommended product: Young Living Multiple Vitamins
Master Hers-Code3216,
Master His-Code3218, or Master
Children's Code 3215).

Meditate
|
|
| |
|
|
Meditation has been found to calm stress, heighten mood,
and to generally improve health.
Many people find it difficult to learn meditation, so I created the animated
meditations. They are very easy to learn and free.
I recommend starting with the basic meditation called
A Sacred
Place Within. Also
see the section below on meditation.

Essential Oils
|
|
| |
|
|
Therapeutic, Grade A, Essential oils (not perfume grade
which is most of what is sold on the market), contain healing constituents
that directly enter the blood stream to calm, soothe, and help your body to
heal.
There are many ways to use essential oils (Also see
Applications of Essential Oils) but my favorite for relaxing
are...
 |
Baths - Prepare your bathroom with candles,
music, herbal tea or another favorite beverage.
When the bath is about 3/4 full, put 5 to 10 drops of Lavender, or any
other essential oil you choose, into a warm bath. Step in and
enjoy.
The essential oils will gravitate to your body, and are absorbed into
the bloodstream through the skin (transdermal
absorption), giving you the benefit of the oil's
healing
properties such as the
aromatic, increased
frequency, and extra
oxygen,
to name just a few, making this a very therapeutic bath.
|
 |
Diffusing - Diffusing essential oils gives you
all the healing benefits of the essential oils, in an easy to use
manner. When Grade A Essential Oils are diffused, the micro
particles are inhaled.
What I love about diffusing essential oils, especially when people are
gathering in a room, is that they can......
1. Give added protection by killing bacteria and viruses on
contact, which is a big plus during the cold and flu season.
2. Set the mood for a gathering of family and friends. Use
pine or cinnamon, or the blend
Christmas Spirit. |
* Note: Some oils may be toxic to cats
- so put them in another room when diffusing. Let them out about 20
minutes later.

|
Try to
spend a minimum of five minutes per day in the sun.
|
|
| |
|
|
Research has shown that lack of sunlight can cause
chemical disruption within our bodies that can result in depression and a
lowered immune response.
During the winter months when sunlight is hard to get in the mornings and
evenings, going for a short walk on your lunch break can do wonders for your
mood and your health.
|
|
| |
|
Dietary
Supplements
|
|
| |
|
|
If your body is lacking in certain nutrients, depression and illness are not
far away.
See the
Vitamin Chart for details of which vitamin deficiencies can cause
specific symptoms.
The recommended supplements below are from
Young Living Essential Oils, and contain essential oils, which enhance
the absorption of the vitamins. To learn more about the unique formulation
of these products, see
the company background.
We burn more vitamins B (Super
B, Code 3240 )and C (Super
C, Code 3242 ) when we are stressed. Lack of these two
vitamins can not only trigger depression, but it can also lower immune
response.
If you are healthy and eat reasonably well, a quality multiple vitamin is
still recommended
Master Hers-Code3216,
Master His-Code3218, or
Master Children's Code 3215.
St.
Johnswort - So much has been written about the effectiveness of
St. Johnswort in combating depression, and can be found in most local health
food stores.

Most people are now aware that it is impossible for our
public water to be free of contaminants.
We have to put chemicals in the water in order to kill
the deadly bacteria, viruses and parasites, but these chemicals are also
toxic.
Then there are the other problems of acid rain, toxic
run-off, and contaminated pipes.
The newest threat, bio-terrorism, makes it even more
important that you have and effective filter.
The below are just a few quick quotes regarding our toxic
drinking water:
 |
Oregonian, Friday, June 2, 1995 - "Two
environmental groups say the data link 1200 deaths and 7 million cases
of illness annually to contaminated water."
|
 |
USA Today, May 12, 1993 - "Drinking
water supplied to 30 million people in 819 cities contains unhealthy
levels of lead, the EPA said. Children are especially susceptible to
lead poisoning, which can impair mental and physical development.
|
 |
Coronaries/Cholesterol/Chlorine, By Dr.
Joseph M. Price, M.D. - "Chlorine is the greatest crippler and killer of
modern times. It is an insidious poison."
|
 |
The Environmental Defense Fund -
"Although concentrations of these carcinogens are low...it is precisely
these low levels which cancer scientists believe are responsible for the
majority of human cancers in the United States."
|
 |
Health Freedom News, January/February 1987
- "The drinking of chlorinated water has finally been officially
linked to an increased incidence of colon cancer. An epidemiologist at
Oak Ridge Associated Universities completed a study of colon cancer
victims and non-cancer patients and concluded that the drinking of
chlorinated water for 15 years or more was conducive to a high rate of
colon cancer."
|
 |
St. Paul Dispatch & Pioneer Press, December 17,
1987 - "Long-term drinking of chlorinated water appears to
increase a person's risk of developing bladder cancer as much as 80%,"
according to a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer
Institute. Some 45,000 Americans are diagnosed every year with bladder
cancer." And, "Chlorine itself is not believed to be the problem.
Scientists suspect that ...the actual cause of the bladder cancers is a
group of chemicals that form as result of reactions between the chlorine
and natural substances and pollutants in the water."
|
 |
Dateline NBC, September, 1994 -
"It was a startling realization...Milwaukee was being poisoned by its
own water. More than 400,000 sick. More than 4000 so sick, they were
hospitalized." |
Drinking only filtered and/or purified water is the
safest solution to this problem. However, choosing the right type of
drinking water can also present many challenges.
Most people's first step is to order bottled water.
Bottled water has not proven to be the safest alternative. The FDA
specifications, which are nearly identical to the Environmental Protection
Agency's requirements for municipal water, are designed to ensure that
bottled water is as safe as that from the tap. Many people are amazed to
find that these are the only guidelines/regulations for bottled water.
In fact it has been found that countless consumers who have paid dearly for
store-bought water were in fact buying tap water in a bottle.
For these reasons more and more people are turning to
water filtration systems for their homes and offices. In fact, it has
been estimated that within the next ten years, 43% of the American
population will have a drinking water treatment system in their homes. This
is a step in the right direction, but the most crucial step is to make sure
that your water filtration system is certified to do what the manufacturer
claims.
Many companies make claims, but very few have documented
proof and/or certifications to prove their filters meet even the minimum
required standards, much less to meet their claims. For a full
chapter on water filters, detailed documentation on water contaminants, and
recommended drinking water filters which are
NSF Certified, see the chapter on
Drinking Water and Water Filters.
Do you ever feel so stressed, sad, angry or irritated that it is hard for
you to function?
Grade A Essential Oils help a great deal, as does meditation.
Using both essential oils and meditation together is a dynamic process, with
each tool greatly enhancing the other.
There are many different animated meditations available
in the chapter
Animated Meditations. I developed these animated
meditations for three reasons:
|
|
| |
|
 |
For people who find it impossible to clear their
minds enough to meditate. These animated meditations are so easy to
learn, all you have to do is watch them.
|
 |
Because there are times, even when one is proficient
in meditation, when life is so stressful it is difficult to clear the
mind enough to meditate.
|
 |
The animated meditations make it possible to
consciously work at a deep level, concentrating on specific issues such
as stress, anger, fear, grief, health, and prayer.

The animated
Flexibility Wheels, were specifically designed to help you to
release negative emotions.
The directions are at the
Flexibility Wheel Main Page.
Flexibility Wheel 1 is for "shaking up" and releasing negative
emotions.
Flexibility Wheel 2 is used to smooth, soothe and refresh.
These animated wheels are meant to be used in conjunction with one another.
*** Note: Using Flexibility Wheel 1 without also using
Flexibility Wheel 2 can cause irritation.
Always use both as is described in the
Flexibility Wheels directions. |

This month's topic has to do with a little know, and sometimes deadly, fact
about some drugs that are prescribed to children.
Most people believe that all prescribed drugs are FDA
approved. NOT TRUE! Many times drugs that have not been approved by
the FDA for use by infants and children, are prescribed anyway.
Doctors can still prescribe a non-approved drug as
"off-label" use. This means there has been little to no research on
the effects a drug will have on a child, therefore it has not been approved
for use by children and infants. When your child takes this type of a drug,
you are in effect allowing your child to be used as a guinea pig.
This might be great for drug sales, but I want to know
all the facts regarding all risks and dangers associated with approved
drugs, and especially with non-approved drugs.
Before accepting any prescription for your child, always
ask if it is FDA approved for children and infants, and NOT being given as
"off-label" use.
|
|
| |
|
Did you know that in the United States, drugs are the fourth major cause of
death!
 |
We can not longer assume that over-the-counter, or
prescription drugs, are safe. In fact, drug side effects
have become such a common problem that death by drugs has its own name
... ADR (acute drug reaction).
In hospitals, ADR is the reported cause of approximately 100,000 deaths
per year.
The key word here is reported, that does not include the thousands of
deaths that go unreported.
|
 |
According to the Journal of the American Medical
Association (1998;279(15);1200-1205), antibiotics, antidepressants,
cardiac medication, pain medication, sleeping pills, and tranquilizers
are the most dangerous.
|
 |
The purpose of this monthly article is to alert you
to possible dangers, not to tell you not to take medication.
Always discuss the benefits and risks of all medications with your
health care provider. |
Cisapride (Propulsid) - During the holidays most of us
eat and drink more than we normally do, which can cause occasional
heartburn. For other people heartburn is an on-going problem.
Last year 6.1 million prescriptions of cisapride were
dispensed in community pharmacies for nighttime heartburn. But is this
drug safe?
Since September 1993, 38 deaths (including children and
infants) related to cisapride have been reported to the FDA.
For the third time in five years, in June 1998, the FDA
issued new warnings for cisapride regarding who should not take it, and
which specific drugs it interacts with.
People with the below disorders should not take
cisapride:
|
|
| |
|
|
Heart
Disorders, such as:
- Congestive heart Failure
- History of rhythm disturbances of the ventricles (large chambers of
the heart)
- Prolonged QT Syndrome - An electrical disturbance of the heart
Kidney Failure
Low
potassium or magnesium blood levels
Respiratory Failure
|
|
| |
|
People taking cisapride alone, or in conjunction with
other drugs, have experienced serious hearth rhythm disturbances, sometimes
resulting in death.
Drugs which can interact with cisapride, and potentially
lead to a fatal heart rhythm disturbance are: |
|
| |
|
|
Astemmizole (Hismanal), Bepridil (Vascor), Claruthromycin (Bizxin),
Disopyramide (Norpace), Erthromycin (EES), Fluconazole (Diflucan),
Grepafloxacin (Raxar), Indinavir (Crixivan), Itraconazole (Sporanox),
Ketoconazole (Nizoral), Mexiletine (Mexitil), Nefazodone (Serzone),
Phenothiazine (Antipyschotics), Procainamide (Procanbid), Quinidine
(Quinidex), Ritonavir (Norvir), Sparfloxacin (Zagam), Tetracyclic
Antidepressants, Tocainide (Tonocard), Tricyclic Antidepressants,
Troleandomycin (TAO).
|
|
| |
|
Other Adverse Reactions
to watch for:
|
|
| |
|
|
Adverse Reactions In Adults |
|
| |
|
 |
Allergic Reactions, including
bronchi-spasm, hives and rashes. |
 |
Asthma - Potential worsening
|
 |
Breast Enlargements, in both men and women
|
 |
Heart Rhythm Disturbances
|
 |
Prolactin - High blood levels of this
hormone and a milky discharge from nipples. |
 |
Psychiatric Events, including confusion,
depression, hallucinations and suicide attempts. |
 |
Seizures |
 |
Urinary Incontinence |
|
|
| |
|
|
Adverse Reactions In Children
|
|
| |
|
 |
Apathy |
 |
Breakdown of Red Blood Cells
|
 |
Breathing - Stops |
 |
Confusion |
 |
Concentration - Impaired |
 |
Death - Associated with heart rhythm
disturbances and seizures. One three month old infant died of
"sudden unexplained death." |
 |
Depression |
 |
Hyperglycemia (High Blood Sugar)
|
 |
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
|
 |
Sun Sensitivity - Can be serious
|
 |
Visual Changes - Accompanied by amnesia
|
|
|
| |
|
Even though FDA has not approved cisapride for use by
infants and children, doctors can still prescribe this drug as "off-label"
use. This means there has been little to no research on the effects a
drug will have on a child, therefore it has not been approved.
Before accepting any prescription for your child, always
ask if it is FDA approved and NOT "off-label" use.
Alternative suggestion:
Aside from the concerns of cisapride, there are also
concerns regarding the side effects of over-the-counter antacids, which can
include depletion of Vitamins A, B, C, D, and many include aluminum.
Research clearly indicates that aluminum is a
contributing factor in mental impairment and the development of Alzheimer's,
Lou Gehrig's, and Parkinson's Diseases.
Even though the FDA has approved H-2 Blockers (aka Axid, Tagamet, Zantac)
for over-the-counter sales, you need to know the facts before you use them.
Side effects can include allergic reaction, constipation, depression,
diarrhea, depletion of iron, hair loss, headaches, insomnia, liver damage,
nausea, and osteoporosis.
Generally speaking, the people who use antacids are older, may already have
nutritional deficiencies, and could be seriously compromising their health
by using these over-the-counter drugs. What to do?
|
|
| |
|
 |
Drink WATER
Pure water, not tap water.
Most people do not drink enough water, and heartburn is actually a
symptom of dehydration.
|
 |
Diet
Most people are very aware that their diet contributes to their
heartburn, so make an effort to eliminate or cut back on those foods and
drinks.
|
 |
Reduce Stress
Stress can cause heartburn - Many exercises in the chapter on
Animated Meditations were developed to help learn stress
management.
|
 |
Substitute natural substances whenever
possible.
Some suggestions are:
1. Sprouted wheat bread instead of white or wheat.
2. Fresh fruit instead of sugar.
3. Butter or olive oil instead of margarine.
|
 |
